JASPERS 1

The first genetic classification of jaspers (by M. Campos-Venuti 2010).

1-OCEANIC JASPERS
Oceanic Jaspers have organic opal precursor and are formed on deep water seafloor by organogenic sedimentation.

Flints
Flints are interbedded in limestone deposits and are found in nodules or in horizontal layers.

Flint, Holy-Cross Mountains,  Malopolska, Poland

Ribbon Jasper, Australia

Flint, Morocco

Flint , Niobrand Fm., Beaver City, Nebraska.

Flint, Onega River, White Sea, Russia.

A typical deposit of nodular black flint with evidence of boudinage in the limestone of Dieppe, Normandy, France.

Radiolarites are a kind of flint made by Radiolarian that, under favorable conditions, can produce blooms that are responsible
of major depositions in extremely short periods of time. They have bigger size with lenticular shape and are more colorfull than normal flint.

Mookaite Jasper, a radiolarite from the Windalia Formation (100-115 millions year), Mooka Creek, Kennedy Ranges, Australia.

Clovis type arrowheads by artist Woody Blackwell, using flint from Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, near Lake Meredith,  Texas.

Arrowhead of the type Button-Base Dovetail by artist Roy Miller, using flint from Flint Ridge, Ohio.

Abyssal Jaspers
Abyssal jaspers (cherts) are stratified iron-rich jaspers (red, yellow ocher or green) formed on top of ocean floor basaltic sequences, under the carbonate compensation depth (CCD).

Red Jasper, South Africa.

Snakeskin Jasper, Pilbara, Australia

Avatar Jasper, Arizona

Abyssal jaspers are well exposed at the waterfall of Quebrada de Jaspe, near Santa Elena de Uairen in Venezuela.

BIF
Banded Iron Formations are huge deposits of layered hematite or magnetite alternated with jasper
and associated with the formation of the early stage atmosphere.

Tiger Iron Jasper, Ridley Range, Pilbara region, Western Australia.

Folded red banded jasper alternated with hematite, Minnesota (2300 million years old).

Jasper Knob or Jasper Hill is a giant block of BIF red jasper in the south-eastern part of the town
of Ishpeming (Michigan) lining Jasper Street.
